History of the Alfred Research Alliance

For almost 100 years, research has been conducted at the Alfred’s precinct. Today, our alliance includes eight organisations and 8000 staff, working together across 20 disease disciplines.

1989

The Inner & Eastern Healthcare Network (including The Alfred), Baker Medical Research Institute, Macfarlane Burnet Centre for Medical Research and Monash University agreed to establish a new academic precinct on the Alfred Hospital campus.

1999

Construction of AMREP commenced with funding provided by the four partners, the Victorian government (via a Science, Technology and Innovation (STI grant)) and an anonymous donor.

2002

Official opening of AMREP by Premier of Victoria, the Hon. Steve Bracks (Baker Institute building, Monash laboratories, Ian Potter Library, Precinct Animal Centre and AMREP Education Centre). Opening of Burnet Tower and relocation of the Burnet Institute from the Fairfield Infectious Diseases Hospital.

2005

Deakin University and La Trobe University joined the AMREP partnership.

2006

Merger of Austin Research Institute with the Burnet Institute to create a new, larger Burnet Institute.

2008

Merger of Baker Heart Research Institute with the International Diabetes Institute to create Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute. Establishment of Monash University School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine.

2010

Completion of The Alfred Centre with new clinical, research and education space for all of the AMREP partners.

2011

Restructure of Monash University Central Clinical School.

2012

2018

AMREP members sign a new governing agreement which cements their shared aims and intents. Affirming their commitment to open, productive and collaborative approaches, shared strategic investment in infrastructure, platforms and processes, and intensified collaboration.

To reflect this new agreement, AMREP rebrands as the Alfred Research Alliance – a name which acknowledges that, while place is important, it is people who make it exceptional by their commitment to excellence, their collaboration, and the way they translate new thinking into real impact for people locally, nationally and globally.

2019

Nucleus Network and 360biolabs join the Alfred Research Alliance, bringing the total number of members to eight.
