That’s a wrap on Alfred Research Week 2024

25 November 2024

Six events with more than 1200 registrations means 2024 will go down as one of our biggest research week celebrations ever.

Alfred Research Alliance’s research week is our annual event that celebrates the eight organisations on this one precinct conducting research.

This year we delved into the use of artificial intelligence in medical research. Through special events, we brought to the surface how we are currently using AI, and what the opportunities/challenges are for using this developing technology in our research.

It was clear our researchers are keen to learn more about the use of artificial intelligence in medical research when 350-plus attended the pre-research week "Introduction to AI" webinar with Dr Sandeep Reddy.

Monday’s showcase event was exceptionally popular. Dr Shane Huntington, science radio presenter, scientist, and science communicator set the foundation for a new event format for us. He did an exceptional job of challenging our researchers to present their work in six minutes. This format worked extremely well, the lecture theatre was almost packed, the energy was high. Being able to convey research in a short, snappy way is skillset our researchers will benefit from.  We would now like to roll this format out throughout the year as it provides collaboration and transparency among the precinct. It’s an excellent way to bring the precinct together, while keeping the audience engaged.

The Monday event provided a great segue into Tuesday’s keynote address by Tracey Duffy (pictured left) from the Therapeutic Goods Administration.

Her keynote was very valuable for our precinct and helped us to better understand the challenges/issues around AI but also the opportunities of embedding AI into our research. It provided transparency around where we currently are and where we could and need to be. Patient data and privacy is our biggest challenge, as highlighted throughout.

This year’s scientific abstract competition attracted a record number of submissions with almost 250 received.  A special awards ceremony was held during research week, with each winner receiving their prize by Professor Terry O’Brien, Alfred Health’s Acting Director of Research.

Feel like you missed out? You can still view recordings of the Dr Reddy webinar,  Tracey Duffy's keynote address or read a summary of the week's events on our events page.
