Trauma, Critical Care + Perioperative Medicine

Alfred Health experts in intensive care, anaesthesia, trauma surgery, emergency medicine and rehabilitation lead and participate in large-scale national and international, multi-centre clinical trials.

Undertaken in collaberation with the Australian and New Zealand Intensive Care Research Centre (ANZICS), the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists Clinical Trials Group, the Monash School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine and the National Trauma Research Institute.

Major Alliance investigator-initiated trials which have recently attracted NHMRC Project Grant funding include:

  • Pre-hospital Antifibrinolytics for Traumatic Coagulopathy and Haemorrhage (The PATCH Study) (led by Prof. Russell Gruen, Trauma Service)
  • STandaRd Issue TrANsfusion versuS Fresher red blood cell Use in intenSive carE (TRANSFUSE): a randomised controlled trial (led by Prof. Jamie Cooper, Intensive Care Unit)
  • Restrictive versus Liberal Fluid Therapy in Major Abdominal Surgery: The RELIEF Trial (led by Prof. Paul Myles, Anaesthesia & Perioperative Medicine)

Critical care researcher Prof Carol Hodgson won the 2023 Alfred Research Alliance in Clinical Research for her efforts leading the TEAM Trial, which published its primary findings in NEJM late last year.
