A new, state-of-the-art, purpose-built preclinical imaging facility opened in 2018 for use by researchers at the Alfred precinct.
The facility includes:
The 9.4T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system is optimised for rodent and high-resolution sample imaging. The ultra-high magnetic field coupled with rodent cryocoils provides structural and functional images with higher resolution and signal to noise ratio compared with standard MRI.
Highly experienced staff can assist researchers with study design and image analysis. For general research enquiries contact:

Pre-clinical – Monash Biomedical Imaging
This system was launched at the Alfred Research Alliance in 2012. It provides high-resolution, high-efficiency PET and X-Ray CT scanning for in vivo small animal imaging.
This small animal PET-CT scanner is located at the Alfred Research Alliance-Monash Biomedical Imaging (ARA-MBI) site in Prahran.
The Mediso NanoPET/CT is a small animal preclinical scanner suitable for a wide variety of radioactive tracer imaging and computer tomography (CT). Typical applications for PET tracers include oncology, cardiology, metabolic, neurodegeneration and obesity research. The CT component is ideally suited to a number of applications including bone, organ, anatomy and developmental biology research.
Researchers interested in accessing the PET-CT system should contact the facility. For general research enquiries contact:

PET-CT (ARA-MBI) – Monash Biomedical Imaging
ARA-MBI operates the world’s first MPI instrument that is paired with a localised hyperthermia system (HYPER module) and CT scanner. Working synergistically together, these three technologies offer a preclinical theranostic platform that delivers exceptional image quality to detect, and treat, therapeutic targets. The MPI can operate with or without the HYPER module and CT scanner.
